My Inconsistency Is My Only Consistency
Monday, May 17th, 2010 at 3:42 pm“If you do what you’ve always done, you will get what you have always gotten.” Anthony Robbins
This quote holds true for life as it does for golf. To become successful, we need to put ourselves in comfortable situations as often as possible. This is where routine comes in. Building and practicing a routine will allow you to replicate your optimal set-up, mind-frame, focus and level of relaxation.
Many of my students, when asked, would state they are seeking consistency in their golf game. Many of them also wonder why they hit the ball well at the driving range and not on the course. I believe routine plays a large part in both consistency and the ability to be “as good as you were on the range.”
Let us take closer look at what most people do when at the driving range. They actually create a routine without even thinking about it. They will hit numerous balls, with the same club, with the same setup, towards the same target. That sounds like a routine to me. Most people will experience some level of success with this process. It is a very effective way to learn the game of golf for a newbie. Unfortunately, for most of us, this practice doesn’t transfer well to the golf course. Very rarely while playing a round, will you hit the same club, from the same place, with the same setup, towards the same target.
How do we solve this problem? One way, would be to not practice. That would save you the frustration of the comparison between the range and the course. A better solution would be to replicate what you do on the golf course, on the driving range. Try hitting a different club, with a different setup, towards a different target with each ball you hit. Practice the way you play. By performing your golf course routine at the range, you will give your body a chance to be rested and strong for each shot you hit.
Routine (a customary or regular course of procedure)
= Consistency (steadfast adherence to the same principles, course and form)
