When the Stars Align, Great Things Can Happen
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 at 8:29 amOne of the most common problems golfers face is misalignment. Through bad habits, self correction and poor routines we often end up aiming in the wrong direction. Misalignment causes no end of trouble for golfers including: slices, hooks, pulls, pushes, shanks (yes, I said the forbidden word), tops, skulls, worm burners, whiffs, duffs. Even the often referred to “you lifted your head” can be caused by misalignment. Proper alignment may not cure all of these ailments but it will give you the best chance to hit the ball towards your target.
It is very tough to check your own alignment. Golfers often do this by looking across their shoulder line. When done correctly, this can prove effective. Unfortunately, many golfers turn to look at their target by turning their shoulders along with their neck. This motion causes the shoulders to get stuck in an open position that does not match the rest of the body in the setup. Players need to focus on looking at their target by turning their neck only. This will allow the body to stay in the proper setup position that has already been created.
A solid routine along with supervised practice sessions can help golfers retrain their eyes and bodies back into proper alignment. There are also a few training aids that can help get you back on the track to success. Once your alignment is correct, your natural hand eye co-ordination can take over. It is important when you practice and play to make sure that you follow your routine each time. Once you set your club and body, do not make adjustments to your body. Practicing your alignment without hitting shots will be very beneficial for your game. Good alignment will allow your game to be more consistent. I have had my best games when I go through a round and can fully trust my alignment. Confidence in your alignment allows you to swing freely and fire at the target.
